Chael Sonnen unsure if Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa happens at UFC 298: “It doesn’t feel like those guys are getting ready to fight”
Chael Sonnen has a bad feeling about the planned UFC 298 matchup between Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa.
Whittaker vs Costa is scheduled to take place inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on February 17. The middleweight collision is set to be featured on the main card of UFC 298. Some have been skeptical of the bout ever taking place given “Borrachinha’s” history with unfortunate fight removals.
Count “The American Gangster” as one of the skeptics.
Chael Sonnen Doubts Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa Happens At UFC 298
Sonnen uploaded a new video on his popular YouTube channel sharing that he doesn’t exactly have great thoughts on the likelihood of Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa taking place on the UFC’s next pay-per-view event (h/t MMAJunkie).
“I was asked what I thought about Jon Jones and ‘Rumble’ Johnson,” Sonnen recalled. “And I simply responded, ‘That fight will not happen.’ That was it, and a couple of weeks later, the fight blows up and it doesn’t happen. I didn’t have any inside scoop, I just never felt that that fight was going to happen.
“I didn’t ever believe that those two were going to walk out there and for what reasons now, can’t fully remember. I am not that bullish on Paulo Costa vs. Robert Whittaker. I am not that bullish, but boy it’s along the same vein. It doesn’t feel like those guys are getting ready to fight.”
This would be a big blow to the UFC middleweight division, which has been heavily criticized in the past, although the rise of current champion Dricus Du Plessis and the outspoken former champion Sean Strickland have certainly given new life to the 185-pound division. We’ll see if this matchup goes down as advertised.
